As Lester settled in atop his bed in the back seat, we prepared ourselves for a long day. And a long day it was, over 550 miles. We saw a lot of things - Dollywood, big crosses, windmills, a Wilco truck stop (only some of you will understand) the University of Tennessee, a giant Confederate flag - and our moving truck.
No, really. Our moving truck. Our driver. Our stuff. See the picture through the back window? I waved at him but he probably thought I was some Yankee nut.
Despite our ambitious plans to eat our way to Texas, the realities of real road food have set in. Lunch was burritos near the University of Tennessee. Dinner was takeout salads from O'Charley's. Think Applebee's, Friday's, every chain restaurant combined. They have things on the menu like "Chicken O'Tenders." And a variety called "Kickin' O'Tenders" - perhaps I'll give those a try next time.
And we did have a little snack in between, but that deserves its own post.
So now we wrap up the day and plan for tomorrow. It's a shorter day since we're only headed to Hope, Arkansas. We estimate about 6 hours, so we'll stop in Memphis, take a short walk and find some lunch.
And the Lester update? He's all over this hotel thing. Elevators are intriguing, but back staircases where a dog can blow off some steam are even better.
